Our Classroom Environment
In the Reggio Emilia philosophy, the environment is considered the “third teacher”—a space that guides children’s curiosity, relationships, and growth just as much as adults and peers do. At Ark Valley Preschool, every corner of the classroom is designed with intention to invite exploration, creativity, and community.
Exploration Stations
Children move through a variety of Exploration Stations—such as Construction Cove, the Art Studio, the Self-Care Station, and Tinker Town. Our classrooms are calm, organized, and natural — each space offers open-ended materials and opportunities for children to experiment, problem-solve, and express themselves in unique ways. These discovery spaces encourage children to:
Explore deeply
Express ideas
Practice social skills
Build confidence in independence and collaboration
Why It Matters
By weaving together environment, choice, and documentation, our classrooms become more than just places to play. They are living communities where children learn independence, empathy, collaboration, and resilience—skills that carry far beyond preschool.
Moving Through the Stations
To support choice and community, children use magnetic badges to select their station. Each area allows a set number of badges, which teaches natural lessons in counting, turn-taking, patience, and flexibility. This routine gives children voice in where they learn, while also helping them navigate transitions, practice self-regulation, and recognize the give-and-take of shared space.
Our social-emotional learning (SEL) approach is woven into every station and corner of the classroom. The environment itself teaches through simple, consistent tools that help children build awareness and confidence. Breathing Balls invite children to pause and regulate. Self-Love Mirrors encourage pride in identity. Energy Friends give them words and visuals for their emotions. The Resting Place, our Cozy Cube, offers a safe spot to regroup and recharge. Kindness Awards highlight empathy and care for others, while Learning Stories document not just what children learn but how they grow socially and emotionally.
Transitions are also part of the learning. Timers and photos help children see themselves moving into the next part of the day, making the rhythm of school predictable. Call-and-response routines, “first/then” visuals, and the gentle language of our Energy Friends all support children in knowing what comes next and what is expected. Boundaries and routines aren’t restrictions—they are the framework that helps children feel safe. And when children feel safe, they are free to explore, to wonder, and to engage fully with the discoveries waiting for them in each station.

Books That Shape Our Environment
At Ark Valley Preschool, the stories we choose are intentional. They spark curiosity, nurture empathy, and reflect the diverse identities of our children and families. These books are more than read-alouds — they open conversations, inspire play, and help create a classroom where every child feels seen and valued. Below are some examples of the books that help shape our environment.
I Hear You, Forest by Kallie George
This gentle story reminds children to pause, notice, and connect with the natural world. It’s an invitation to mindfulness outdoors, where every sound becomes part of the conversation.
