Communication with Children
At Ark Valley Preschool, we believe the way adults communicate with children shapes how they see themselves and the world. Respectful, positive communication builds trust, confidence, and strong social-emotional skills that last a lifetime.
Our Approach
Respectful Language: Teachers use kind, clear, and developmentally appropriate words in every interaction.
Active Listening: We make space for children to share their ideas, feelings, and stories, showing them their voices matter.
Positive Reinforcement: Encouraging words highlight effort, persistence, and kindness rather than just outcomes.
Gentle Guidance: When challenges arise, we redirect with empathy and calm language, teaching problem-solving instead of focusing on mistakes.
Modeling: Teachers demonstrate respectful communication not only with children but also with one another. By treating colleagues, families, and community members with kindness and respect, children see clear examples of how empathy, collaboration, and healthy communication look in everyday life.
Learning Stories
Communication doesn’t stop with spoken words — it continues through learning stories.
These narratives are how our teachers document each child’s growth, discoveries, and moments of wonder. Rather than focusing on checklists or outcomes, learning stories capture the child’s voice, process, and relationships in context.
Each story is shared with families as a way to celebrate progress and strengthen the bridge between home and school. They serve as a form of meaningful communication — honoring the child’s perspective and inviting families into the learning journey.
Learning stories allow teachers to:
Reflect on children’s thinking and development
Communicate learning in authentic, story-based ways
Recognize strengths rather than deficits
Foster deeper connection among teachers, children, and families
Through storytelling, we nurture the message: your ideas matter, your growth is seen, and your story is worth telling.
Co-Leads at Ark Valley Preschool
Each classroom at Ark Valley is guided by a Co-Lead Teaching Model, where two educators share responsibility for care, communication, and curriculum. This partnership ensures every child is seen and supported from multiple perspectives.
Co-leads collaborate closely to plan experiences, reflect on observations, and support one another in modeling healthy communication. Their teamwork mirrors what we want children to experience — collaboration, empathy, and respect in action. When children see adults working together with kindness and purpose, they learn that strong communities are built on listening and cooperation.
Why It Matters
Through consistent, respectful communication, children:
Build self-confidence and independence
Learn how to express emotions in healthy ways
Practice empathy and cooperation
Develop problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills
Witness adults modeling positive relationships and communication
Our Commitment
Every word, gesture, and interaction is a chance to nurture a child’s sense of belonging and self-worth.
By listening closely and documenting with care, we ensure each child’s story is heard — and celebrated.
