Spotlight: Women Who Care Chaffee County

In 2024, Women Who Care Chaffee County awarded Ark Valley Preschool their quarterly community grant — an honor that reflects the shared belief that accessible, high-quality early education strengthens our entire community.

Founded in 2018, Women Who Care brings together local volunteers who each pledge $100 per quarter, pooling their donations to make a collective impact. 100% of member contributions go directly to the chosen nonprofit, supporting organizations that meet critical needs across Chaffee County.

During their quarterly meeting, our Director, Carmel Burton, shared Ark Valley Preschool’s story:
how a small group of parents and educators reopened the historic Poncha Schoolhouse to serve families after its closure left dozens without care. Carmel spoke about the challenges families face in a county officially designated a childcare desert, the financial realities of sustaining early education programs, and the deep joy that comes from creating a space where children feel safe, seen, and celebrated.

Her message was simple:

“Every child in Chaffee County deserves access to joyful, safe, high-quality early education—the kind of foundation that leads to stronger futures.”

Following her presentation, Women Who Care selected Ark Valley Preschool as the recipient of their quarterly grant — helping us continue our work to expand access, support our teachers, and sustain the village we’re building together.
